Military

Overview

While I knew I needed to complete it, I actually had no interest in joining the military. After evaluating the options, I decided to choose what I considered the "easiest and most comfortable" route: Complete my service at KATUSA. My dad, however, had other plans in mind.

With a desire to see me become "tougher" and seeing the value of using this opportunity for great personal growth, my dad suggested that we make a bet, where if I don't get picked on the KATUSA lottery draw, I would have to submit an application to join the one of the greatest fighting forces in the country: the ROK Marines. Read here how the ROK Marines gained their reputation as a formidable fighting force during the Vietnam War.

Long story short, I was not selected on the draw so I put in my application for the Marines as promised, and after passing the physical screening test and interview, I joined the Republic of Korea Marine Corps in 2012.

After 2 years of service, I left the military to continue my hospitality education.

How does this relate to helping you?

During my time in active duty, I was a communications guy, mainly stationed at a base located less than 2 KMs away from North Korea situated along the Northern Limit Line. I have also completed a non-combat deployment to Afghanistan as part of NATO's ISAF.

I have led up to 10 Marines in daily operations and occasionally served as a translator for officials during joint trainings with the US Marines.

Before I joined, my Korean was rusty, I didn't understand the culture very well and struggled to relate to the local people.

I faced language barriers, as well as, physical and mental challenges, while having to lead a group of men on certain occasions. I learnt how important it is to put the mission or the collective goal before myself, how to be a team great player, to adapt quickly to your environment, and to lead despite feeling under qualified to do so.

If you need help with any of those, I can help. Click here to learn more about my Teamwork and Leadership service and here to schedule a call with me.
